Thankfully, I've never had serious sleep onset problems. Very rarely. When they had me doing sleep restriction at the sleep clinic, they wanted me to log how long I was awake (without looking at the clock), take Melatonin at a certain time (without looking at the clock), get out of bed and go in another room (without looking at the clock)...I say throw out the sleep diary. All it did for me was fuel the obsession with how long I was awake, how little sleep I was getting...

Once I decided sleep restriction wasn't for me, I just started going to bed when I was tired, and getting up when I felt like it. For a while, that meant that I was in bed from about 9-6 or longer, but not sleeping for about 2-3 hours in the middle of the night. It helped to get that extra hour or two on the end. But I didn't worry about it, and it has gradually gotten much better. Now I generally get 7-8 hours a night.

The key is...stop thinking about it so much. I stopped researching it, and stopped talking about insomnia to anyone except here. And just went about my day, refusing to let it get me down.
