computer screens an onset problem?

Posted by Lunar Lander on February 16, 2006 at 10:50:47:

I hear things here and there about how you shouldn't be on the computer for like an hour before you go to sleep, and if you're doing stimulus control, you shouldn't be up on the computer. I think one of the warnings I heard about computers is that the screen is too bright and will stimulate you. However, the computer is a good source of distracting entertainment! I don't normally do things like puzzles or read about classical music (two uninvolved things I've tried, the puzzles actually have worked some), so when I'm doing them, they've become "trying to get to sleep" activities and thus, I am thinking about trying to get to sleep when doing them...and you all know how that goes. Normally when I'm just kicking back I go on the web or write in my diary or something, and sometimes I notice that I'm getting sleepy when on the computer a few hours before bedtime.

I think I'm starting to see this aspect of the Tom-n-Texas philosophy, that the new things you try to get to sleep can become things which keep you up because you are preoccupied about sleep when doing them, and the things you used to do (I used to be on the computer pretty much up until bedtime) worked for you in the past so maybe you shouldn't be so worried about them because you'd been a good sleeper much of the time you used to do them.

I guess my question is - did anyone else avoid the computer and then find it wasn't a big deal later? I actually think it would help me sleep as long as I'm not doing anything dutiful like trying to do my taxes or something.

I wonder why I'm even asking this question because I could just try it again myself and see what happens. I guess it's just that lingering fear that I'll miss a night of sleep with this experiment, which is stupid because worst comes to worst I could just take a pill.
