My big fear would be flipping out somehow, but I asked my therapist if he'd ever known anyone to do that in thirty years of practice and he said no. He also said that any of the problems you have with attention, memory, etcetera, go away after you get sleep so it's no big deal.

Every now and then I run the worst-case scenario in my head: OK say I freak out (impossible since if I miss two nights of sleep, which I've never done, I'd take a pill). They take me to the hospital, put me under sedation for eight to ten hours, and then I'm fine. Plus if I'm fortunate I might get a medical leave of absence from work for a few weeks and maybe get to live on disability (woo hoo!). This is kind of a reverse form of catastrophizing I'm engaging in.

I know how much it is a pain, though, worrying about what this is doing to you. I've read about the studies in /Say Good Night To Insomnia/ and while they are reassuring on some points, it seems you can always think of an exception or some point not covered. You could maybe think about or collect and print out some posts for here where people who've recovered talk about how it wasn't too hard to get by if you kept your mind off of it or something; that's basically my "study", knowing that a lot of people here got the same or less sleep than I did.

Also, I have an appointment with a sleep specialist next week and might have my sleep restriction monitored...that might give me a little bit of extra confidence.
