I think your second paragraph hit the nail on the head. There's always a a theory or gimmick that we can try to get to sleep, but if you used to get right off the computer and then fall asleep, it probably isn't your problem. Just like you can have a cup of coffee in the morning and a glass of wine at night and eat some junk food and don't exercise and stay up late or sleep in late and it probably won't be the cause of your insomnia. There is no right answer that fits everyone. That I know for sure, after over a year of having this issue. Some love sleep restriction, some hate it. Some insist it's all diet, some don't change theirs at all. Some feel medication is completely unacceptable, some find it useful. Some stop drinking...you get my drift, I'm sure.

If I could suggest...you are still looking very hard for a cause. Just do what used to feel normal, try not to worry too much about a lack of sleep, address your anxiety and stress if you have some (other than about sleep), and give it some time. Go about your life and try not spend too much time obsessing about sleep. It's simple, but hard.
