Not watching the clock is pretty essential, in my book. I never look at it unless I'm pretty sure it's almost morning, even if I get up to go the bathroom or something. Even if I'm just laying in bed not sleeping I'm better off not knowing the time, for just the reason you said. I also have a "pet alarm": my cat starts meowing around the time I should be getting up anyway, so I don't have to look at the clock. I still haven't figured out how he knows what time it is! :-)

Also, it feeds into people obsessing about their sleep patterns: often people will say, "I wake up at 2:34 every morning and can't get back to sleep" and then that become the expectation, that they will wake up at that time. They wake up, see the time, and feel defeated and discouraged. If they don't know the pattern, they can't obsess about it. This is also why I found that sleep journals increased my obsession with sleep.
