Paxil is commonly prescribed for anxiety, but some SSRIs do have insomnia as a side effect. So it could actually be making your insomnia worse.

If you are not a naturally anxious/worrier type person, then maybe just working on changing your thoughts about sleep and your health issues might help. This involves changing whatever anxious/stressful thoughts might be contributing to your insomnia. Jacobs book "Say Goodnight to Insomnia" has been helpful to many of us.

Xanax is meant to be a short-term, as needed medication, so you definitely don't want to get hooked on it as the only way to sleep. If you want to keep taking medication, maybe it would help to see a psychiatrist. Don't stop the medication without talking to your doctor though, Paxil can have withdrawal side effects if stopped too quickly.
