Thanks for your response optimistic. It's good to know I'm not alone. I've quit trying to talk to co-workers or friends about this because they look at me incredulously and say "afraid of insomnia...really?!?!" Then they suggest something lame like warm milk....as if I never tried that. (arrgh)
Anyway, I think when the anxiety gets out of control high, ambien really doesn't work, at least not at the doses I'm accostomed to. For REALLY bad nights, like after working a shift where one of my patients codes or something and I'm physically and emotionally spent and too over tired to drift off, I'll take a VERY small amount of klonapin- .125 mg, or .25 mg. It helps. I take this so infrequently that it took me 2 yrs to go through a bottle of 30 tabs . I only have one left however so I just ordered some on-line (hate to admit it), but I know just having it available to me will be a help and I'm pretty neurotic about taking it very sparingly.
For moderate anxiety, what I've found helpful is my Tae Bo tapes. Yeah, they're a little dated, but they make me feel so strong, and capable....and it gives me a good work out. I'm pretty certain it releases serotonin, those feel good chemicals in the brain. Also, I've just ordered some summer reading. I find at night, thinking about what I've read....or "watching myself" in my head do my exercize tapes take my mind off sleep. Keep your life busy with hobbies and new interests and don't focus on how you will sleep that night-just put the thought right out of your head! Tired your head out with pleasant thoughts like decorating your house, or buying new clothes....or getting a new "do". Maybe shallow, but alot more pleasant than "OMG-it's getting dark and I'm dreading it".
I'm also focusing on the possibility of getting a puppy-something I've wanted my whole life. I'm researching breeds and reading about their training. However, I'm also worried that a 4 legged creature in my house I'm not used to will screw up my whole sleeping regime again and cause more anxiety---back to the drawing board. I'm really glad I didn't have this sleep neurosis until my mid 30's and done with having my son and getting him to sleep through the night. He's a teen now!Anyway-sorry for my ramblings....hope some things I've said help...and thanks for your support.
