Progress and patience

Posted by moonatic on June 12, 2006 at 14:22:06:

Well, I've started tapering off my sleep meds. I went to a doctor who prescribed Seroquel for sleep and once I read the side effects, I decided enough was enough with the meds. There was no way I was going to take something that may, among other things, cause type 2 diabetes. So I'm seeing progess in little bits. If I wake up in the middle of the night, I won't reach for anything to help me fall back asleep. Cognitive restructuring is helping me and it's AMAZING that you can change your mind that way. But of course, it's slow going. I'm transitioning into sleeping normally again, but the interim is hard. On the weekends, I'm ok and can sleep in a little (I know, it's a no-no). But today, on about 3 hours of sleep, I'm feeling like my "old" negative self who could easily slip into making insomnia a self-fulfilling prophecy. I've read posts, especially DC Tom's, about patience and I need a reminder that it WILL continue to get better. I'm really encouraged by the small improvements I'm seeing, but I'm still sleep deprived and need some outside encouragement that it will continue to improve. Thanks all.
