Yes, many people seem to feel that their way is the best and only way....I notice it on the board here, too. I think the path is different for all of us, and that whatever works for us is okay, be it taking medication or changing beds in the middle of the night. (I did that too early on, and it really highlighted for me how psychological this thing is). I agree with moonatic, that the sleep clinics don't seem to know diddly about plain old insomnia, and don't seem to get the anxiety related component of it.

The thing that's worked best for me is just addressing my stress and anxiety, and accepting that I'm going to have bad nights and not giving in to the negativity. I have bad and good stretches and I try not to limit my activities too much, but sometimes I do that, too, if it helps to reduce my stress.
