I have read "scientific lit" that says both things. I think much of it is overhyped, meant to scare people who stay up too late into getting more sleep.
I also think most of us are getting far more sleep than we think we are, and the studies show that 4-5 hours is plenty for people to function quite normally. Many of us are getting at least that much, even when we perceive it to be much less. Rarely are people getting no sleep at all, even though I know it feels that way some nights.
It does affect the mood, I'll agree with that, but the other stuff is unproven and mostly just about everyone's worry more than reality. The living proof is all of us who survived it without a scratch. I even get sick far less than my friends who sleep well.
