I've just spent 2 days researching this. There is a lot of controversy about this, but there is no scientific proof that antidepressants are harmful over time. There is a lot of information out there arguing about it, but that mostly pertains to the SSRIs, which neither of us take.
One of the articles I found on Medline was specifically about antidepressants and insomnia and it said that it antidepressants seem to restore Circadian rhythms and give more natural sleep to insomniacs. From the changes I can feel in my body, I think my body needs the chemicals from the antidepressant; I actually seem to feel my Circadian rhythms back on track. And sleeping makes me feel so much better about everything else that I don't care too much whether I even take this forever.
I think that insomnia and depression are probably biochemically related, although I couldn't find evidence of that. Insomnia is certainly a symptom of depression, and antidepressants work for a lot of people with insomnia, so there must be some connection.
