Meg-
I was wondering why my ENT recommended Elavil, since it's an older antidepressant. In fact, I wondered why he prescribed it at all since I'm not depressed.
Anyway, thank God he did! It's been a blessing. It's been over a month now, and I'm totally off ambien/ativan. I guess I was lucky, I had no side effects whatsoever from abruptly stopping those meds.
I agree with Natalie, I don't care whether I end up taking this on a permanent basis. It has turned my life around in terms of a refreshing, good night's sleep. Ideally yes, it would be nice not to have to take anything, but I have no more of a problem taking elavil than I do taking pills for high blood pressure.
For those who urge that we go to psychoanalysts to get to the root cause of insomnia instead of relying on meds, I say that's fine if you have the time and the money for something that may or may not resolve your problem. As for me, at this point I could care less what the root cause may be.
