head banging/rocking and insomnia

Posted by Don on December 02, 1999 at 19:25:13:

Pardon me if this is posted to thw wrong area - I read some threads I found through a web search but this site wouldn't let me post followups there - only here... message follows:

Well heck, I might as well leave a message since I've had the benefit of reading the other stuff on this list, found through a web search.

I've been a "head banger" since about age 1, and did it furiously throughout childhood - I can tell you that subjectively I was doing it because my brain was rewarding me... with some sort of "happy sleep" chemicals it emitted when I did it. Inasmuch as I had some behavioral difficulties, I suspect either a problem with my brain or metabolic insufficiency which caused a deficiency of some needed substance. I moved to rocking chairs when I grew too tall to wham my head against the back of the couch, and use them to this day in a way that provides maximum G force and breaks a lot of LaZBoy chair springs - I replace broken springs regularly.

The reason I'm checking is that now, at 49, I have extremely problematic insomnia - difficulty in falling asleep or falling back to sleep - which can progress to utter exhaustion and heart arrhythmias - I WISH I had narcolepsy, at least then I could get treatment. Anyhow, other factors make me think that this, too, is the result of some sort of metabolic or organic problem which results in a shortage of something necessary in my brain. A large cash reward to anyone who can point me to a diagnosis... because I have been worked up for all the "common" stuff and am disgustingly normal. That notwithstanding, this is destroying my life and career.
