Don-
I was thinking about your problem, because it is interesting, and remembered this being a symptom on a checklist that we (I'm an occupational therapy student) use with clients who might have sensory integration issues. Sensory integration is just how people filter and process . Anyway, I found the thing I remembered, and head banging can be a symptoms of problems with the reticular formation, which controls arousal (sorry if you know this, I just don't want to throw around a lot of nonsense). Since you do this in trying to sleep, I thought this was a good bet. Other symptoms of reticular formation problems are having trouble paying attention, difficulty orienting to activities, lack of or impaired resonses to pain, touch, light, smell or sound; difficulty transitioning from place to place or activity to activity. I don't know if this will help you at all, but thought it was worth passing on.
