Check out this web page:
http://www.pathfinder.com/drweil/qa_answer/0,3189,3,00.htmlIt is from Ask Dr. Weil, who is a naturopathic doctor who is a trustworthy source. I did a melatonin search on his site. I think that the link I gave is either for an answer about melatonin or it is the page I searched from (I forget; I'm doing finals now too :).
He didn't address any problem with birthcontrol pills, although you might want to call your pharmacist and ask. There probably isn't a problem though, since melatonin is made my your body. If your depression is seasonal (related to the lack of daylight) melatonin can help more than if it isn't.
I don't know much about melatonin, but I know it should be a short-term treatment. If you take it too long your body will quit making it, so you become dependent on the supplements. You are right to see a doctor.
I hope things improve for you.
