teenage insomnia

Posted by J. Harris on December 11, 1999 at 12:21:16:

My wife and I are desparate to find a way to help our 13-14 year old son to get into a normal sleeping pattern. We have consulted a head of psychiatry at our local childrens' hospital to no avail.

He cannot get to sleep before 1:00 a.m. and sometimes is up till 2:30 or 3:30 a.m. He has to be up to get to school at 7:00 a.m. Consequently, he has been late more than on time.

After a few days of this, he often falls asleep in the evening only to get up at midnight, stay up all night and sleep all the next day, missing a day of school.

The school (and us) believe it is affecting his studies and mental health, because he appears to be withdrawing from his peer group.

It is almost impossible to wake him up, and, if we ever leave him asleep, he will sleep all day.

He is a gifted child in an accelerated program with much homework.

HELP!!!
