You didn't mention whether you actually had insomnia or that you were a night owl? Since there is quite a difference in time in England, the effects may only have been temporary. Your body temerature was probably still in the time zone that it was when you were at home and hadn't shifted to England's time yet. If you were to have stayed in England, your temperature would probably have shifted to their time and you would have had more trouble falling asleep and would have gotten up later and later.
I don't think moving to England would have solved anything long term. Many people are natural night owls,(Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrom) if this is what you actually have. Early morning sun exposure can really help with this condition, along with a regular shedule.
