You know, I think you are on to something! For 11 years I had a very high stress job. Each day was pressure packed. It got so bad I would dread going into the office.
Anyway, my whole viewpoint re. sleep changed during that time. I viewed sleep as an escape from the job pressures. Even when not at the office, I would dwell on what I was going to face the next day or week.
So I wound up going to bed early, knowing that sleep would not only get my mind off of work but would also probably entertain me with various dreams. (I rarely have nightmares).
I looked forward to sleep. I came to really enjoy it (of course for all the wrong reasons.)
Now that I no longer am faced with job stress, I find I now suffer from occasional insomnia. Sleep is no longer the "friend" it used to be. Now it is something that I have to do as opposed to really wanting to do.
The trick is to once again make it a friend instead of an enemy. I like your idea of developing an imaginary life and associating it with sleep. That promotes a positive image.
As is true with most things, the problem is primarily mental and/or emotional. We just need to learn how to turn that to our advantage.
