You are not alone. My 16 year old son has been experiencing those same sypmtons for 16 months. After having a full physical and blood workup done, as well as numerous trips to the allergist, (he suffers from severe allergies), and then being referred to an ENT who in turn referred us to a sleep clinic, we hope now to have an answer for this odd behavior. My son is also a gifted child who has become a complete hermit with no social life. He is always at home and always tired. We believe when we get the final diagnosis from the clinic in a few days that it will be that he has "Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome." I have been able to find some information on the web, but this dissorder was only diagnosed in 1981 so there is not enough information available. My son has been through "hell" trying to convince us and the doctors that there was something wrong with him and that he wasn't just lazy. When I allow him to sleep as he says he needs to, he will go to bed at 4:00 a.m. and rise at noon or later. He looks better and feels better when this is allowed. He has been to doctors 29 times since October of 1998. This is a very real problem. Please don't assume that your son is lazy or doesn't care. In addition, his grades have dropped dramatically and his attendance problems are extreme. We are confident that we are now in the hands of someone who can help us. Best of luck to you and your son.
