You know, I'm actually IN that place now where all the craziness seems far behind me and I wonder why I did all of the things I did. When I first developed the chronic insomnia, if I couldn't sleep in my bed, I would lie down on the hardwood floor of my bedroom, and would actually fall asleep there! When I look back, it seems absurd, but at the time, I let anxiety run my life.
I agree, you have to just trust that you will get back on track. For me, the best "trick" was getting to a place in my life where I no longer feared insomnia, where I knew that if I had a bad stretch, I'd get through it, albeit a bit uncomfortably. The second "trick" was reducing stress overall.
I've never personally found anything that is guaranteed to put me to sleep at night, but have found one thing that's guaranteed to keep me awake: anxiety. Keep working on the sleep anxiety, that's where the solution lies. If you are still anxious about sleep, medication won't be as effective either, at least in my experience.
