I was on Ambien (the same drug, I believe) for many, many years and I did find that my memory got to be badly affected. I don't think I noticed this effect until I had been on the drug for many years (like 10 years, maybe) but it did start to affect me badly.
I quit using it a year ago (I've taken, maybe 3 pills in the last year, so I figure I can say I, basically, quit) and have noticed my memory has improved greatly. So I guess the effects are not permanent, though it's hard to say if my memory is back to what it was before the drug because now I have to be aware that aging might also affect my memory to some degree.
Bottom line;the effects were not permanent if you can get off the drug, or at least use it quite sparingly.
