I have the David Pal. I am also affected by the Starnoc discontinuation. I wrote about the David Pal earlier in this forum. For me, it temporarily helps with stress and anxiety (for a couple hours you feel nicely relaxed). It is hard to maintain those brainwaves which means it likely won't help a serious insomniac fall asleep if the sleep anxiety comes back at bedtime. It does help relaxation though, in the same way that meditation can, only faster and better. I think it can be considered another tool in helping to relax, but don't think it will "cure" insomnia. Maybe along with a sedating antidepressant or melatonin, which is what I do now and it seems to work. You have to be quite dedicated to using the machine every night (or maybe even twice a day), which is not as simple as just taking a pill. It's hard to keep it up. I found nothing negative about using it, but unfortunately it's no substitute for Starnoc (for me). Hope this helps. Good luck!
