You basically have to tell yourself that you will enjoy yourself regardless of how much sleep you get and then DO. Enjoy yourself anyway. You can still think, laugh and have fun even after a bad night if you choose to. Once you realize that you can have fun on very little sleep, the insomnia loses it's power. Stop yourself from saying "what if..." in your mind and replace it with, "I'm really looking forward to it and I will have fun regardless". I found a lot of fun tired, in fact, sometimes I was so punchy that I laughed at everything, which made it even more fun.
Then, if you don't sleep well, don't engage in "oh this is terrible,I won't enjoy myself at all" thinking; instead think "well, I wish I had slept better, but oh well, I'll enjoy it anyway" and then go have fun. Really. The more you try to control sleep the less you get. Just put it out of your head and concentrate on the event and the others with you. Don't spend the evening thinking "oh God, this is terrible, it's so unfair, how will I walk home, why is this happening to me, I hate this". If those thoughts pop up, banish them with "I can handle this with no problem".
I found that NO ONE noticed when I didn't sleep well. In fact, shortly after I started sleeping well again, someone remarked that I looked tired, which I found rather funny, since they had never said that once in the previous month, when I hadn't slept much at all.
You have control over your thinking, and once you realize that, you will start to get better.
