Yes, it does help, A LOT. Also, be very, very patient. Recovery is measured in small steps, and it takes time for your brain and body to calm down once you stop getting it revved up with anxious thoughts. This won't change overnight, but you should see small improvements if you stick with it.

One tip...don't tell yourself that sleep will come, because it might not. Tell yourself that if sleep DOESN'T come, then you will survive anyway, no big deal. If you tell yourself "sleep will come" it's too easy to get discouraged.
