Moderate Success

Posted by larrydea on February 27, 2007 at 08:07:56:

It has been many years since I have posted on this forum but it was the advice and information provided on this site that enabled me to find the right combination of medicine to overcome this debilatating disease. I just thought I would take the time to provide a brief explanation of my insomnia as well the meds that have enabled me to lead a somewhat normal life. I started to experience frequent awakenings in my early 20's. I had also had several experiences with panic attacks and anxiety. I tried many over-the-counter meds as well as relaxation therapy. I saw several psychologists and psychiatrists and tried numerous meds including remeron, zolot, xanax, alprazolam, prozac, and several others which I cannot recall. I also had a home sleep study done which showed that I did not have any physical problems such as sleep apnea. I know that everyone is different and that different meds work for different people. I also know that many people, including myself, struggle with dependence on meds but after trying several times to wean off of my meds, I have come to the conclusion that I am cursed with a disease that most likely will require life-long treatment. My current treatment includes 50 mg of Trazodone per night along with 20 mg of Paxil. They originally had me on 150 mg of Traz and 40 mg of Paxil but I was a walking zombie so eventually decreased doseage to 50 and 20 which seems to work well without some of the more extreme side effects. Do I sleep like I did post insomnia?...no way but I am able to function and live a normal life without dreading my nights. I still struggle with the fact that I am dependent on these meds to sleep but I can tell you that life after meds is much better than life before meds. I hope that each and everyone of you find an answer but please know that long-term meds are not just a curse...they can also be the closest thing to a cure!!! Good luck to you all and praying that you all get a good nights sleep soon!!!!
