I don't think you did anything WRONG..perhaps just didn't give yourself enough time to be ready to stop medication. It has taken me two full years to really get to a place where I trust my sleep system completely, and know that except for predictable times, I will sleep well. That's two years with Remeron. I've tried to stop it, but I just don't sleep as well. Since two of my siblings have the exact same insomnia pattern, I've come to accept that it is something organic and I will likely need some antidepressant or other forever. I'm okay with that. If you can get to a place where you feel okay about taking an antidepressant for a while (especially Remeron, which is essentially lousy at treating depression, but great for sleep, especially at that low dose)then you can use medication as part of your solution.
