I absolutely think my insomnia has a biochemical basis. The only useful thing I got from the sleep clinic (other than a suggestion to use Remeron) was the idea that people with strong family histories of bipolar disorder (I have an aunt on each side with it)often have sleep problems. The idea that it is biochemical was cemented for me when I found out that two of my siblings have the EXACT insomnia pattern that I do...going to bed very early (8-9 pm), waking up after about 4 hours and being unable to sleep for about 2-4 hours in the middle of the night, and then falling asleep again shortly before dawn. Without Remeron, this is my pattern. It doesn't always happen immediately, I can sometimes go about a week without Remeron before it breaks down. Other times, it happens right away. The anxiety about functioning just made it all snowball, but underneath the anxiety is a real sleep disorder, in my opinion.

Could I live without Remeron? Probably...but why should I, when it helps SO much? On Remeron, I can put away 10 hours of sleep with barely an awakening, and can nap for hours too. What is so bad about needing a little pill to sleep? I guess I don't see it as weakness or dependence. I take medication for my asthma and don't consider myself weak, what would be the difference?

Thank God for chemistry, I say.
