Hi Cantsleepman.....are you sure there is nothing new going on in your life?...something that may make you feel helpless or out of control or insecure? (besides your insomnia, of course.) Usually an inability to go to sleep goes hand-in-hand with a control issue. I used to be in your shoes and went many many months of sleeping very very poorly (or not all). It started out of nowhere after being a good sleeper all my life. Then it spiraled and my insomnia soon got completely out of control. After trying everything in the book I learned that not sleeping was something that had to be solved on the inside. For me there was no external cure...there was no pill...there was no magic routine. Sleep was not something I could trick myself into or make happen.

Going to sleep is mental -- it's just a matter of having confidence that you are doing the right thing and simply being at peace with yourself when you get in bed at night. It's really that simple, and once you learn this simple truth it will help you zero in on what is and what is not important regarding sleep. And it's very important that you learn these things because if you're not careful you could be inadvertantly fueling your insomnia. But to help you be at peace with yourself you need to learn the art of distraction. Distraction when you go throughout your day, and especially distraction at night when you lay down. You need to try and put your mind on something other than insomnia...something that really engrosses you and/or makes you feel at ease. Maybe also you should consider that something may have come up in the past year that is making you feel insecure. Not be able to go to sleep is a tell-tale sign. Good luck, Tom
