My opinion...NO to question number one. You have not broken anything in your brain. You may have thrown your circadian rhythm off by traveling out of your time zone, and so had trouble sleeping even when you returned home. Then you got anxious about the problem of falling asleep and so you made it worse.
If you don't fall asleep right away, you probably lie in bed thinking scary anxious thoughts about how horrible this is and how you'll never sleep again, right? How scared you are and how it's affecting your life negatively? These thoughts are keeping you awake.
You need to learn to relax and trust your body to sleep again. It takes to time to recover from these things, but if you stop worrying, you obviously have the ability to sleep fine (as evidenced by your 10 hour nights), and will probably be able to recover without medication.
Anxiety is the culprit. It may not be an underlying disorder (or it may be); it might just be situational...worrying about insomnia. Research the forums, there are a lot of great posts about this issue.
