I think you should use sleep medicine only as a last resort. Start with psychological methods such as cognitive-behavioral therapy. Even if you do use medicine, they will help you.

Try reading the book, "Say good night to insomnia" by Gregg Jacobs. Informative and describes highly effective CBT methods.

If you can afford it, a therapist could help you. Make sure he or she is compatible with you and is level-headed. Most nowadays say they use CBT but skill levels differ a lot. I think your goal should be to coaching in applying CBT methods that you can use not only for insomnia but for other problems.
