lu: thank you so much for your comments. It's a valid hypothesis, and one that I've been chewing over. I've come to the conclusion that I probably haven't acquired Zopiclone dependency, for a few reasons:
1) the every-night insomnia started in June following a 2-week period where I had slept perfectly each night and hadn't used Zopiclone. In other words, I didn't have any rebound insomnia following the last time I had used Zopiclone before this acute insomnia started.2) the insomnia started after 3 hugely stressful events (on the evening of the conclusion of the last one, which seems telling)
3) I had used Zopiclone intermittantly, and at a pretty low dose, for the 12 months prior to the onset of this acute insomnia (1.25 mg one to three nights per week, perhaps once or twice per month.)
My initial onset of insomnia 20 months ago was precipitated by a medication withdrawal, but this was Sudafed withdrawal, not a sleep med. (By the way folks: don't take Sudafed for three weeks, no matter how bad your sinus infection!) This was a paradoxical reaction, since Sudafed is known to be a CNS stimulant. If anything, it's typical to have difficulty sleeping while taking the Sudafed...but it was the other way round with me. (Perhaps I should try going back on Sudafed again? Just joking.)
I am still suspicious about hormone levels, especially the possibility of peri-menopause, since I was having ferocious night sweats before and during the acute insomnia onset in June.
I think I'm a good candidate for sleep restriction which will mean withdrawing from the Z, so this could be interesting. I will report back...
