Hi There: I have, within the past 3 months, started on an Rx for Amitriptyline (AMI). The dose the MD began me on was 25 mg and he said I could go up to 50 mg a night. The 25 mg worked, but I found if I took it at bedtime (10PM), I would lie awake until 1 AM or 1:30 AM. So, I began taking it 3 HOURS before bedtime, at 8 PM. Then I went to bed at 11 AM & fell asleep shortly after I went to bed. After a week, I noticed dryness of the mouth, so I decreased the AMI in half to 12.5 mg at 8PM. That HAS worked, & I have less trouble with dry mouth.
My partner who also has transient mild insomnia uses 6.25 mg (1/4 of the 25 mg tab). He takes it an hour before his bedtime, and just when he needs it--not every night. I take my 12.5 mg nightly, but I eventually want to also try taking it only on an "as needed" basis. Sometimes, when I have a big, stressful day the next day, the AMI doesn't work and I am up all night. When I see my MD in 5 days, I am going to see if he can give me samples of Sonata 10 mg and Lunesta 3 mg to use (on different nights) if the AMI fails to work on certain nights.
