Everyone is different in their reactions to stopping synthetic hypnotics, which means you're the only one who can answer your question. I believe we're all our own experimental animals when it comes to trying any regimen, whether it's pharmaceutical meds, or herbs, or CBT.

My own experience with Zopiclone is: when I stop taking it, I have one night of fractured sleep, then I'm fine from the next night on. (But I know when to stop it, meaning I know I can sleep without it.) I don't even know if the first night of lousy sleep is due to a withdrawal from the Z, or my own fear of sleeping poorly. I've taken Z for months at a time over two years, and never had more than one night of withdrawal, if that's what it is.

By experimenting just as you have, you'll eventually figure out what's going on with you when you stop the Ambien, and what works best. If I have to take a sliver of Z to sleep on a night I've committed to stopping, I don't sweat it, and just try again the next night.
