Hi Brian - if you read through this forum you will find many, many people with a very similar story as you - which is at least comforting. With the sleep study thing - I would find another sleep clinic who will do the study - even though you don't think your problem is apnea - something might be going on with your breathing as you are falling asleep that you aren't aware of. When I had my first episode of insomnia 7 years ago I made an appt. at a sleep clinic and was told the same thing in the consultation appt. - that I wasn't a good candidate for the study b/c all they would do is "watch me not sleep". 7 years later I went to another sleep clinic who DID do my study (I took ambien to sleep) and they did find that I stopped breathing while I slept - although I didn't have personal success with the CPAP machine, I am at least glad I went through with the study. Find another clinic if you feel strongly that you want a study done. Also, if you really believe that your inability to allow yourself to relax and sleep is due to certain thoughts that creep in or worry, then you will really benefit from all the books that are recommended on this forum - Plus, I am sure many of us can relate to the doctor dilemma - finding ones that will really listen and help us! Keep us posted on your progress!
