I agree with F43 that each person will be different, and even each "bout" with insomnia can be different for the same person. I know with me, I've taken ambien for several months straight over the last 6 years when I've been attacked with insomnia, and then one night, I did the whole "try to sleep without it" thing, and I just slept. This has happened at least 3 times - where my insomnia leaves just as quickly as it came, and I had no rebound or withdrawl. At the moment, I'm a little past a year with my recent bout with insomnia, and I definitely feel the psychological pressure that you mentioned with sleeping without meds. I don't remember how I dealt with that the last several times I slept that first night...
