I wish I had some specific advice for you. Your story really touched me. I want to at least share some thoughts, even if they aren't an answer.

My husband takes seroquel 100 mg. and it knocks him on his butt. And he's a large guy. He "sleeps the sleep of the dead" on that stuff. I don't know much about the drug but at that dose I would think it would be conking you out for days. Perhaps it's one of those things that happens with many drugs.... at a certain dosage the side affects flip flop. Maybe it creates wakefulness at that level.

I would imagine with your condition that having as much normalcy is important, esp. sleep. So if I was in your shoes, I would be getting very assertive with my healthcare providers so they fully grasp what this is doing to you, not getting sleep. I am not an expert or dolling out medical advice... but I'm thinking with the meds you are on for the Schizophrenia that going the natural route for the sleep problem might not be very effective. With that said, I would be asking the docs for one medication after another until I found one that worked. I'd be on the phone every few days or at least weekly with the MA or RN in the doc's office giving them an update and asking for the next thing to try.

I know that a lot of folks here aren't big on the sleep meds, and I completely understand why. But I do think they have a purpose and all things considered with your situation I would be pursuing various pharmaceutical options until I found the one that worked even if temporarily to help you get some sleep. I realize there are probably many issues with drug interactions and your doc and pharmacist will be responsible for being on top of that for you.

Once you find what works, as we all know, it doesn't always work forver. But at least it would give you some relief even if it's temporary (although it might not be).

Personally, I have found the benzodiazapiens to be the most effective.

Good luck and please post again and let us know how you are doing!!

Jill
