Rachel - I don't know how old you are but there has been some recent posts on looking at hormonal imbalances and some holistic answers. Without going into my own long story - haha - I will say that my insomnia comes on suddenly too - I don't have anxiety and in my opinion there's no reason for it. I slept fine all my life before it happened, and it lasts for about 8 months (right now it's been a full year) and then it goes away for about a year or two. So, in the last year I've gone through a lot of what you are saying - but in the last 6 months I've just accepted that there is some underlying medical cause that I am going to figure out (seeing specialists, holistic people, talking to other people) - and in the mean time I am going to take the ambien and accept it until I can change it. I take the ambien around 10pm, read a book for a little while, and then go to sleep. Some nights I still don't sleep well (like last night) and I'm tire today, but I know that that doesn't mean I won't get better sleep tonight. I don't plan on being on ambien forever, but for now, I accept it.
