Hi Ollie - a quick update from me. I really believe (and I think this is what Cairo believes too), that Remeron won't work if you are anxious about it not working. If, however, your wife can relax when she gets into bed (I know this is the hardest part - believe me), it will help smooth her sleep.

I had a few bad nights this week, but after spending some time reading this site yesterday, I decided to stick with the Remeron and just let it do its work, and I did get a better night's sleep last night.

One thing I read yesterday which helped me, is to remember that your body still knows how to sleep, it's just the obsession with trying to get to sleep that stops sleep from coming. If you can just lie there and think, okay, I might not sleep at all tonight, but I am in a cozy, warm bed relaxed without anything to do for the next 8 hours, I won't think about sleep but will think about something nice in my life, all of a sudden you are asleep. I think the problem with us insomniacs is that we try and "put" ourselves to sleep as we forget that it will come to us when we are least expecting it. Sleep does not need our help in coming to us, it just needs us to relax and wait it out.

I have finally (like many others on this site) come to the conclusion that sleeping tablets don't really help you practice relaxing in bed. This realisation is starting to help me feel more in control as I don't ponder whether a sleeping pill might or might not help me tonight. Instead, I think I'll take my Remeron and go to bed and relax. If I don't sleep, at least I will have had a chance to practice my relaxation techniques in a quiet, dark space.

I have read that Remeron can assist with anxiety, so maybe that knowledge alone will allow your wife the strength to let go of the fear a bit when she gets in bed.

It is so hard, but baby steps are what we all hold onto, when the blackness is crushing us from this terrible disease.

Good luck
