Sounds very familiar to me, sounds like a sleep disorder. Insomnia is not a disorder it is a complaint and the goal is to find out the source of the problem.

One way to start looking at the possibilities of a sleep disorder is taking the sleep test on this site. Not perfect but can help point you in the right direction.

You should have a consult with a sleep specialist. Until then safety is the number one concern so he should avoid any dangerous activity when sleepy, including driving.
