You not alone in this. The same exact thing happened to me. I'm not saying its normal. I have sleep problems, and I developed this system where I sleep 12 hours straight every two days. I know its wrong, but I seem to feel more alert that way, and get more sleep than I do if I sleep every night.

Anyway, every now and then, like this past tuesday night, I was in bed about to do my 12 hours and something came up, which somehow distracted me, and somehow fell out of my sleep window. I was up till 4 feeling exhausted yet unable to sleep.

I think there must be cycles in the body that somehow give windows for good sleep. At least thats my case. Being overtired makes a lot of sense. I think it happens because we try so hard to stay awake just to make it to the second night and not screw up our schedules, and somehow program ourselves to stay awake.
