Hi Sleepymom,

I have experienced similar things when I was overly anxious about getting to sleep. This whole process of self monitoring, jolting when your slipping away to sleep, etc. is happening because you're overly concerned and obsessed sleep. Believe me, I know how you feel.

Reading your post, it's clear that you're over analyzing things. Who cares if it's considered stage 1, stage 2, or whatever. It is what it is. If your relaxed and not freaking out, than see it as a victory. You are facing your fear head on and winning.

Do your best to follow the advice of Sam (i_will_sleep_again). You really just have to slowly get into the frame of mind that you don't care if you sleep or not. You will be strong, enjoy your life, and be thankful for all you have regardless of how you sleep.

Remember that you WILL sleep when your body absolutely needs it.

Good luck,
Jim
