Are Sleep studies useful?

Posted by Tapout on November 21, 2008 at 14:01:51:

Hi,
I've just discovered this forum, and I'm really hoping being able to discuss my insomnia problems will help me cope with them.

I developed insomnia about 2 years ago, and it's been hell trying to maintain a "normal" life ever since. I'm pretty sure it's stress related as it started when my job became precarious, a situation which persists to this day. My doctor has had me on various meds, including Zopiclone, Torazadone, Clonazepam, Ativan, Effexor, and now Zispin. Of those, the only one which truly helped me sleep was Clonazepam, which of course I cannot take forever, so now it's Zispin 15mg nightly. When the insomnia started, my doctor referred me to a sleep clinic, which I have yet to actually go to. I've made several appointments to spend the night there, but I keep canceling. Basically, I think the doctors at the clinic are just going to tell me I have apnea and send me off to get the headgear. I am also a little put off by their procedures, you check in at 9, are in bed by 10 and have to be out the door by 6am. These hours are way off my normal schedule, so I'm convinced I'll get about an hours sleep if I'm lucky.

Can anyone here offer some insight to these clinics? Are they worth the trouble? I'm perfectly willing to go if I can just get some reassurance that they will actually allow me to get some effective treatment.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, any advice or opinions are welcome.

John
