Typically, a lab will not do a sleep study for insomnia unless there is a suspicion of another sleep disorder. It will be determined by taking a sleep history and a physical evaluation.
Good sleep clinics will schedule a patients sleep study during their normal sleep period. If they are a shift-worker and sleeps from 9am-4pm, the study will start at 9am.
Find a sleep lab in your area that uses a persons regular sleep schedule for their sleep study. If you find that there are none, make a request giving them your sleep schedule.
The only reason they would put you on CPAP is if you have sleep apnea. It isn't unusual for someone with sleep apnea to go to a sleep lab complaining for insomnia. Once successfully treated for sleep apnea the insomnia goes away. There are many different treatments for sleep apnea so don't get put off by the machine.
