Posted by sleepymom on November 26, 2008 at 06:46:10:I have been reading the posts here and thinking about trying sleep restriction. My problem is this: when I go to bed, usually around 11:30pm I can often lie there, doing deep breathing for quite some time. It sometimes seems to me as if it takes hours. I know that on nights when I truly have problems sleeping, it feels as if I am dozing off and then pull myself out of it. My question is this, how does sleep restriction work? What if I limit myself to only 4 hours to start and when I get into bed at 2am ( I get up at 6:15am) I am unable to fall asleep right away? Then do I go with less sleep than I had planned? I am just confused because I want to get over this thing and the lying in bed works quite often, as I believe I am at least resting and possibly in a light stage of sleep during that time. Any help on whether this would work for someone like me would be appreciated. I am thinking about buying the book "Say Goodnight to Insomnia" but am not sure if I should. Thanks for any thoughts. Does anyone else have success just lying in bed, resting?
