Though I agree with the whole overactive mind; it was true in my case for the reasons I outlined before, I certainly experienced this deep emotional aspect of insomnia as well.
My insomnia was/is a complex situation, perpetuated and amplified by surface issues (anxiety/overthinking), but brought on by very deep ones (grief/profound feeling of lack of safety).
For this reason, my approach to the insomnia has to be flexible and multifaceted, and I have to accept that my sleep may be disrupted for awhile. CBT worked to deal with the surface anxiety issues very well, but as you point out, the deeper issues will take time and patience.
