All fair points, however please notice I asked the question “how many of you have overactive minds” and I guessed a lot of you. I was by no means saying that everyone who has insomnia is caused by an overactive mind while they lie there trying to sleep, but I know my own insomnia is and I believe it’s the case for a lot of other people too. Also I do not know for certain if CBT would help tame the mind, hence I wrote ‘maybe CBT’ my whole post was just really giving people, who it applies to, something to consider. I also believe that my own mind can be more likely to over-think, in certain places and situations.

Lets look at it in a broader sense; I was at my grandparents quite recently and my grandmother briefly brought up the fact that she struggles to fall asleep and stay asleep every night, that was it, she proceeded to talk about something else, it really didn’t bother her too much, she just got on with things. Yet here are all of us, typing out our lengthy and clearly well researched theories and experiences with our sleeping problems. I think it’s fair to say we are possibly over analysing this a little, well in comparison to her anyway. So I agree with you in the way that people can have insomnia without having overactive minds (maybe her’s was a reduction in melatonin with age – why do I even know that? I didn’t know melatonin was even a word before insomnia) anyway, because of the fact we all post on this message board, I thought we would be the exact kind of people who are ‘over-thinkers’ although I agree that its not the case for everyone.

All the things you said, the stress, feeling overwhelmed etc would understandably cause sleep problems, now im not sure what you have been through in life so I may be wrong, but do you think if you got 10 completely different people, all of who had a similar life to you, went through similar experiences and felt like you feel, would they all develop insomnia? Or would the people who are more inclined to over-analyse their experiences be more likely to develop sleep problems.

I’m sorry if I offended, I can only talk from my own experience, maybe if I was you this would all sound ‘simplistic’ to me.

Some people just seem to not care about things, ‘let-go’ of them, and switch their minds off. Forget about the stress, overwhelming feelings etc……but I cant
