Hi F43
Firstly I would like to say I’m really sorry to hear about your parents etc (I read your replies to Lulubelle) it helps me understand why you see the overactive mind theory as simplistic, and it also helps me see it as simplistic too. I also couldn’t agree more about the doctors, the first doctor I went to see just threw addictive sleeping pills at me, the second guy literally said “I cannot help you, I do not know what to suggest” he asked me what I expected him to do and that made me realise that I didn’t actually know. I think the only way a doctor could be properly helpful would be if he/she had experienced insomnia their selves, or at least understood it.

Your ‘fault line’ theory is interesting too, its like, when there are a lot of stressors ‘something’s gotta give’ maybe sleep, maybe IBS, maybe eczema, maybe migraines.

The thing for me is, because I think too much, once I’d had 1 or 2 bad nights I thought about that specifically and my mind went into overdrive about sleep. However at the weekends when I think about it less, I can sleep. It’s maybe my body found its fault line without it being caused by a stressor, so I guess my future may hold quite a lot of sleepless nights (before important events or other stressing situations) eek, but hey.
Good luck with your PHD and sleep
