Thanks for your really thoughtful message. I think this discussion brings out how complex insomnia is, and that there is no single cause, but multiple causes. I only hope the doctors are listening in! This forum should be mandatory reading for all med students, and for sleep specialists. (If I end up teaching med students, I'll assign it to them).

One of the big things that has gotten me through the experience is that the two people I see regularly for insomnia--my therapist and my psychiatrist--totally and completely get it. They know that for me, the insomnia isn't rooted in the cognitive (e.g. distorted perceptions) or behavioural (e.g. bad sleep hygiene), but emotional and psychological. And I think they also recognize when it's cognitive and behavioural in someone else.

Sometimes, when I read this forum, all I can think is, "how incredible our minds and bodies are."
