Interesting question. I am taking Remeron now because of some pretty heavy events in my life, so I'm cheating a bit. My goal is to try to wean off in the summer.
At any rate, Benzo's have always kind of scared me because I was afraid I would become addicted and then they wouldn't work. I did OK on 5 hours, pretty much felt the same as with 6 1/2 hours sleep-so I would probably take the med free sleep. I just don't like the feeling of being dependent on the meds, and knowing that eventually, I'm going to have to get off the darned things anyway.
My average sleep when I was not taking meds was about 3-4 hours a night, with an occasional 0 hour night, and in a blue moon a 7-8 hour night.
