Hi,
Though I don't have experience with either Lunesta or Ativan, I do take Remeron. When I started back on Remeron awhile ago, my sleep was very sporatic. I would panic if I had one bad night and up the dose. If I had a good night I would cut the dose down again. Eventually I realized that I just needed to stop messing around with the dosage and stay on course. This meant sticking to one dose, no matter how I slept, and giving it time.
It took about 7-10 days of pretty shaky sleep, but now, I'm doing well on the 7.5 mgs of Remeron. I also had to concentrate on my cognative distortions-I can't stand not sleeping well, and it will keep getting worse until I don't sleep at all. I understand being down-you might try sticking with the amitriptyline alone for a week or so and see how you do.
Others on the board may have more relevant advice regarding the sleepers and benzos, so my situtation may not apply in your case.

Good luck, and I agree, these boards have been great.
